The 2011 Casting of the Year award was presented to two companies:
- Lethbridge Iron Works Co. Ltd., Lethbridge, Canada, for its front cab support bracket for heavy truck and
- Eck Industries, Manitowoc, Wis., for its hybrid bus stator housing.
Lethbridge's ductile iron front cab support bracket represents a consolidation of three castings, seven welded assemblies and 16 low-level parts into two castings, zero welded assemblies and four low-level parts. The new component is 7 lbs. lighter than its 42-lb. predecessor.
Eck's aluminum hybrid bus stator housing was produced using a complex core assembly and several cast-in inserts, including a cast-iron center hub, a steel tube and eight cast iron support lugs.
The Casting of the Year is chosen by a panel of judges from various metalcasting backgrounds. To submit a casting for the 2011 contest, click here for a Casting Competition entry form.
